When people ask what I do, I say I'm a CMS developer. The follow-up question is almost always: "Why CMS specifically?"
The honest answer is that I fell into it, and then chose to stay. My first real project was customising a WordPress theme for a local business in Lahore. It was messy, the CSS was all over the place, and I broke the site twice before getting it right. But the moment the client saw their new homepage, everything clicked.
The appeal of CMS development
CMS platforms sit at the intersection of design and engineering. You are not just writing code; you are building systems that non technical people will use every day. That challenge, making something powerful yet simple, is what keeps me engaged.
Over the years I've worked across WordPress, Webflow, Shopify, HubSpot CMS, Unbounce, ClickFunnels, and Wix Studio. Each platform has its own philosophy, its own limitations, and its own community. Learning to work within those boundaries, and sometimes push past them, has made me a better developer.
What I've learned
Three things stand out from my journey so far:
1. Precision matters more than cleverness. Clients do not care if you used a clever CSS trick. They care if the spacing matches the Figma file. Accurate execution builds trust faster than any technical showmanship.
2. Every platform is a tool, not an identity. I have seen developers tie their entire career to one CMS. When that platform changes direction, they are stuck. Being comfortable across platforms means I can always pick the right tool for the job.
3. Communication is half the work. Understanding what a client actually needs, translating that into a technical plan, and then delivering exactly that took longer to develop than any coding ability.
What's next
I am continuing to improve my CMS structure and website speed skills. The web is getting faster, and CMS sites need to keep up. That is where I want to focus next, making CMS sites that feel as fast as custom applications.
If you're considering a career in CMS development, my advice is simple: pick a platform, build something real, and ship it. The rest follows.
From experimenting with WordPress themes to building full scale CMS solutions for clients worldwide, here is the story behind my journey into CMS development and why it remains my passion.
