As a Webflow developer, your job doesn't end when the site goes live. It ends when the client can confidently manage their own content.
Webflow offers two environments: the Designer (for developers/designers) and the Editor (for content managers). If you give a non-technical client access to the Designer, they *will* delete a global class and break the site. Handoff is about setting up the Editor for success.
1. Clean Up Before Handoff
Before inviting the client:
- Clean up unused classes and interactions. Go to the Style Manager and remove unused CSS to prevent confusion.
- Name CMS fields clearly. Don't use "Image 2". Use "Author Profile Picture (1:1 Ratio)". The more descriptive the CMS label, the fewer support emails you will receive.
- Set Character Limits: Use Webflow's native CMS field limits. If a card design breaks when a title exceeds 60 characters, enforce a 60-character limit in the CMS settings.
2. The Power of the Editor
The Webflow Editor is brilliant because it is an on-page experience. Clients navigate the live site, click on text, and edit it directly.
Teach them the golden rule: "If you can see it, you can edit it. If it’s a list of things (blogs, team members), go to the Collections tab at the bottom."
3. Create a Loom Library
Written documentation is rarely read. Instead, record short (2-3 minute) Loom videos for specific tasks:
- "How to add a new Blog Post"
- "How to change the Hero text"
- "How to update SEO Meta Descriptions"
Host these videos on a hidden /client-guide page within their own Webflow site. It acts as an internal portal they can reference anytime.
4. Establish Boundaries
Make it clear what the Editor *cannot* do. The Editor cannot add new sections, change column structures, or alter mobile responsiveness. If they need architectural changes, they need to contact you for a retainer task. Setting these boundaries prevents them from feeling frustrated when they can't figure out how to add a third column to a grid.
A beautiful Webflow build is useless if the client breaks it on day one. Learn how to configure the Webflow Editor and conduct a handoff that empowers clients.
